What is the hybridisation of the N atom in a simple amide such as ethanamide ?
This effect has some important implications for the shape (stereochemistry of the amide functional group) that we should explore.
Look at the 3D JSMOL model of the amide ethanamide and look at the shape at the N atom (blue) : what shape is it ?
N hybridisation, planar, restricted rotation
Amides protonate on O not N
Low reactivity of amide compared to similar compounds such as esters or acid chlorides
