This is written based on L02 in-person progress but this will help L01 students keep track of where they should be.

CHEM351F24 semester break, Nov 11-15 = No classes during this time.

CHEM351F24 MT was Oct 30th, deferred MT Nov 6th. Grading is underway but with the small grading team and over 700 exams to grade, it takes time. We aim to have it complete and published by the end of the semester break.

Review oxidation states (not covered in lectures : should be first yr / high school review, template / worksheet provided facilitate the review)
Review Hydrocarbons : types of hydrocarbon, saturation and unsaturation.
Alkanes : alkanes and cycloalkanes : isomers, physical properties related to structure (intermolecular forces), thermodynamic stability of alkanes (linear vs branched).

Acidity and basicity : Rationalising acidity and basicity at the molecular level by looking at factors that affect these properties : the nature of the atom the H is attached to (electronegativity, size, charge, effect of hybridisation), stabilisation due to resonance and / or inductive effects. Minor factors: solvation and steric effects.
Application of acidity / basicity principles to reactions based on pKa.
