(S)-4-methyl-2-octyne.   The acetylide
ion has an electron rich C atom so it reacts as a nucleophile.  A
secondary alkyl halide is electrophilic at the C-X center and undergoes
an SN2 reaction so forming a new C-C in the new internal alkyne.
Since the alkyl halide is chiral at the reaction center, we need to remember
that SN2 reactions proceed with inversion of stereochemistry.![]() |
