Chem 351 CAL assignments:
ABSENCES
MOODLE is scheduled to be made active first day of tutorials (Tu Sept 10th 2024) for CHEM351F24.
As soon as it is, you will be notified. The most important preparation materials are from the etext, not Moodle. Links are provided below for each CAL assignment.
"Exam conditions" means that you will be allowed to use a calculator and/or model kit and have access to a periodic table and spectroscopy data tables if required. No other resources should be used while completing an assignment. These are the same resources that are allowed in examinations (i.e. midterm, final). It also means, that like examinations, you should not interact in any way with another student while completing the assignment. Anyone found breaking these rules will be awarded a zero and it will be reported as academic misconduct.
If you have any doubt as to the interpretation of the statement about "exam conditions" talk to your instructor or the course coordinator before taking a risk!
The questions in the assignments range from "easy" introductory / fundamental questions upto levels of a similar type to those of Chem 351 examinations and the practice problems we will be providing for discussion in CAL etc. This could include synthesis problems and structure determination problems.

If you have any further queries about these assignments, please contact the CAL coordinator, Dr Ian Hunt.
Week 2, Sept 9-13 2024 : ORIENTATION & INTRODUCTIONS
During the first CAL session, the recommended tasks are:
Weeks 3-4, CAL 351.A1: ORGANIC FOUNDATIONS 1
CAL 351.A1 covers:
a. basic functional group recognition, the basic rules of organic nomenclature and the application of these rules to the nomenclature of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and alkyl halides.
b. structure and bonding (lecture topics : e.g. atomic structure and properties, bond types, bond properties, VSEPR etc.)
c. the language of organic chemistry (lecture topics : e.g. using arrows correctly, structure diagrams, language (definitions and terminology) etc.)
While much of this b & c material should be review from Chem
201/203, it is important to have a good, solid background knowledge to build from.
For most though, much of the nomenclature in 351.1a should be new. This is likely where your preparation should focus..
In order to be ready to complete the assignment, you should work through the CAL materials and / or the appropriate material from the etext and/or lecture notes as you require.
a. The following materials on NOMENCLATURE are recommended:
b. The following materials on STRUCTURE and BONDING are recommended:
c. Moodle self assessments 351.1a and 1b are recommended to check your preparation for this assignment once you have worked through the review materials.
PRACTICE & REVIEW = week 2 Sept 9-13 & week 3 Sept 16-20 2024
ASSIGNMENT to be completed during scheduled tutorial session Week 4 Sept 23-27 2024, 50 minute time limit.
Weeks 5 & 6 CAL 351.A2: ORGANIC FOUNDATIONS 2
CAL 351.A2 expands on assignment 1 and covers:
a. application of basic nomenclature rules to alcohols, thiols, ethers, amines, aldehydes and ketones.
b. structure and bonding (e.g. hybridisation, resonance, formal charges)
In order to be ready to complete the assignment, you should work through the CAL materials and / or the appropriate material from the course textbook / etext as you require. You should also review and learn from your mistakes in CAL 351.A1.
a. The following materials on NOMENCLATURE are recommended:
b. The following materials on STRUCTURE and BONDING lecture topics are recommended:
c. Moodle self assessments 351.2a and 2b are recommended to check your preparation for this assignment once you have worked through the review materials.
PRACTICE & REVIEW = week 5 Oct 1-4 2024
ASSIGNMENT to be completed during scheduled tutorial session Week 6 Oct 7-11 2024, 50 minute time limit.
Weeks 7 & 8 CAL 351.A3:ORGANIC FOUNDATIONS 3
CAL 351.A3 expands on assignments 1 & 2 and covers:
a. application of basic nomenclature rules to carboxylic acids, esters, amides, acyl halides, acid anhydrides, nitriles, benzenes and stereochemistry.
b. curly arrows (for drawing mechanisms, deriving resonance structures etc.) (lecture)
c.
acidity and basicity (lecture)
d. thermodynamics and stability (lecture)
e. isomerism (lecture)
f. properties of alkanes and cycloalkanes
(lecture)
In order to be ready to complete the assignment, you should work through the CAL materials and / or the appropriate material from the course textbook as you require. You should also review your mistakes in previous CAL assignments.
a. The following materials on NOMENCLATURE are recommended:
The following materials on STRUCTURE, BONDING and FUNCTION related to lecture topics are available in the online etext:
b. Moodle self assessments 351.3a and 3b are recommended to check your preparation for this assignment once you have worked through the review materials.
PRACTICE & REVIEW = week 7 Oct 14-18 2024
ASSIGNMENT to be completed during scheduled tutorial session Week 8 Oct 21-25 2024, 50 minute time limit.
Weeks 7 & 8 CAL 351.A4: SPECTROSCOPY
To be completed during scheduled tutorial session Week 12, Nov 25-29, 50 minute time limit..
CAL 351.A4 requires that you deduce the structure of a compound from its MS, IR, 13C and H-NMR.
In order to be ready to complete the assignment, you should work through
the CAL materials and / or the appropriate material from the course textbook
as you require.
Most importantly, there are interactive online spectroscopy problems in the Spectroscopy chapter of the etext that are strongly recommended as preparation for this assignment.
Suggestions of materials to review to help you understand the topics are:
1. Read Solving Spectral Problems using the fragment approach
2. Work through our interactive online spectroscopy problems for PRACTICE !

PRACTICE & REVIEW = week 10 & 11
ASSIGNMENT to be completed during scheduled tutorial session Week 12, Nov 25-29, 50 minute time limit.
Weeks 7 & 8 CAL 351.A5: ALCOHOLS, ALKYL HALIDES AND ALKENE and their REACTIONS
CAL 351.A5 continues to build on assignments 1-4 and also covers:
a. radical substitution reactions (halogenation of alkanes and related systems)
b. structure and properties of alkyl halides, alcohols, alkenes.
c. nucleophilic substitution reactions of alcohols, alkyl halides and related systems.
