Chapter 2 : Alkanes

Hydrocarbons are compounds that only contain H and C atoms, but they can be subdivided according to the following tree diagram depending on the CC bond types that are present.

Hydrocarbons CcHh
Alkanes	Alkenes	Alkynes	Arenes
Only CC σ bonds  all C sp3 hybridised	CC σ and π bonds  C=C	CC σ and  2π bonds  C≡C	6 C cyclic array with alternate  C-C and C=C bonds
ALIPHATIC			AROMATIC
