Heterocycles
Of course atoms other than C
can occur as part of the cyclic structure. Such atoms, which are known as heteroatoms,
e.g. N, O, S give rise to heterocycles. These heterocycles
are, in general, very similar to the analogous hydrocarbons, check out the Chime
images of a few common simple heterocylces and a few more complex natural heterocycles
shown below.
