Common mistakes:
Not identifying a suitable nucleophile / electrophile pair, not using materials consistent with the allowed starting materials as defined in the question, incorrect / ignoring selectivity (regio and stereo) of reactions / mechanisms, implications of SN1 conditions, loss or gain of C atoms.
